The Simandre is a wooden bell, used during Holy Week in the 7th century until the end of the Ancien Régime (1789).

It is 3.5m high and 2.5m wide.

According to tradition, during Holy Week, the bells of cathedrals had to be silent. Most people then imagined different means of calling the faithful to offices, including rattles.

The cathedral of Bourges, just like that of Paris or Amiens, attracted a lot of people, so it had more important means than rattles in the street: La Simandre.

Today, the Simandre de Bourges can be observed whilst visiting the Cathedral. A reconstruction was made for Bourges. Thus, Bourges is the only town in France where the Simandre still resounds during Holy week to this day.
